- Hepatocellular cancer is worldwide the
second most frequent cancer - its incidence increases rapidly in
industrialised countries including Switzerland.
- Hepatitis B and C are the most important
causes of cirrhosis of the liver and hepatocellular cancer.
- Fatty liver disease - a disease of our
society - affects up to 20 % of the population; it can also lead to
cirrhosis and liver cancer.
In the past 10 years medicine has made
major strides in the treatment of liver disease:
- Liver transplantation is a routine
surgical procedure
- Hepatitis B and C can be cured
- Hepatitis B can be prevented by
vaccination (the first cancer vaccine!)
