You cannot live without your liver - and you have only one. Thus: treat your liver well!

Pablo Neruda (Nobel prize for literature 1971) described the function of the liver the best:
    There, inside, you filter and apportion
    you separate and divide,
    you multiply and lubricate
    you raise and gather
    the threads and the grams of life...

    from you I hope for justice:
    I love life: Do not betray me! Work on!
    Do not arrest my song.

Put less poetically:
  • The liver filters whatever reaches the circulation from the intestine including bacteria, drugs, environmental toxins.
  • The liver is a factory which produces virtually all proteins such as albumin and clotting factors.
  • The liver stores energy and vitamins
  • The liver is a most important organ for excretion. Thus, it removes bilirubin (the yellow dye which is responsible for jaundice) and excess cholesterol.
