The most
frequent metabolic liver diseases are diseases of our society:
(non)alcoholic fatty liver/(non-)alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH).
There are some inborn errors of metabolism which should also be
mentionned.
Metabolic liver diseases result from general or specialized acquired or
inherited disruptions of normal metabolic pathways. The most important
metabolic liver diseases are:
NAFLD is frequent: even without risk factors such as diabetes, obesity
or excessive alcohol consumption 20 % of Europeans are affect by it as
shown by an elegant Italion study:
NAFLD is harmless and not in need of treatment; however, when it is
associated with marked inflammation (NASH) it has the potential to
progress to cirrhosis and even hepatocellular cancer. More on that on another website. In our institute, Prof. J.F. Dufour
is always running trials since there is no established treatment for
