Sometimes, your doctor will ask you for a liver biopsy - either to secure the diagnose and/or to determine the stage of your disease

The liver biopsy is performed under local anesthesia. A small piece of the liver is removed by a needle either through the right side of your body or - under ultrasound - directly across the belly. This is an essentially harmless procedure lasting less than a second. The most frequent adverse effect is pain which disappears after a day in most cases. Bleeding complications are rare. The tissue is then examined under the microscope.

A short Video on the www shows a liver biopsy.

Normal Liver biopsy
In the portal tract (Portalfeld) one sees the vessels and bile ducts. 90 % of the tissue are hepatocytes Leberzellen (red).
Cirrhosis
Characterised by increased connective tissue (Bindegewebe) and nodule (Knoten) formation.
