The Fibroscan determines
the extent of scarring non-invasively. The first apparatus
- thanks to the Foundation - was put into use in our institute.
The Fibroscan was developped by a French Company. It can determine
the extent of scarring without a liver biopsy. Thereby, patients
with chronic progressive liver diseases such as hepatitis
C or NASH can be followed without the need of frequent liver
biopsy. We are proud to have been the first in Switzerland
to introduce this technology into clinical practice in Switzerland.
Fibroscan uses a special technique of ultrasound and - as
normal ultrasound - is noninvasice and cheap. The apparatus
'pokes' the liver and measures the velocity whereby certain
soundwaves are transmitted through it. This is a measure of
elasticity of the liver - which correlates with the scarring.
