Many liver disease can be prevented - and prevention is cheaper and more comfortable than treatment.

Some simple, good-sense can prevent that you ever develop liver disease. Details are given in the pull-down menus. A summary is given below what you can do to avoid having a sick liver:
  • Vaccination against hepatitis A and B
  • 'Safe sex'
  • A reasonable diet maintaining a body mass index below 28; personally, I advise a Meditarrenean diet
  • Regular movement - recommend is at least 45 minutes of fast walking or a similar physical exercise
  • Reasonable use of alcohol
    • Red wine in moderate amount (2 glasses) reduces the cardiovascular risk
    • Avoid beer (too many 'dumb calories') and strong alcoholic beverages
    • Beware that alcoholic liver disease can occur even with moderate consumption (30 g of alcohol); if you are prone to this and/or if you have problem with alcohol dependence absolute abstinence from alcohol is recommended.
